Installation View     24' x 8' x 2'    1996 Ana de Portela

(Click on the 3 sections on the right to see some close-ups.)

See what Frances Colpitt, Associate Professor of Art History and Criticism at UTSA says about Ana de Portela

This is an installation view of my San Antonio studio downtown. Its a lovely neighborhood, a stones throw and broken bottle away from the new jail and the homeless shelter. It has concrete floors and a tin roof. It gets over a hundred degrees inside so I work early hours. From left to right are 4x8 panels that represent a wall that could be custom designed to accomidate a new home or hotel entry way at any height. It's a clean contemporary look. This series is named after curls. From left to right: "Rhoda" (after Mary Tyler Moore's Jewish friend neighbor with her side curls), "The Twin Curls", "The Secret Curl" (after my 1991 video instructing the viewer exactly how I get that 'Special Curl'), "Twister Curl", and finally, "That Girl" after Marlo Thomas's flip hair-do from the series "That Girl".
